If you have written anything since November 2022, then you know about ChatGPT and other AI tools that have become very popular. Whether AI brought out your creative, inventive side and you jumped in right away, or it brought out your old, crumudgy side (“Back in my day, we actually had to write our own stuff!”), or it brought out your paranoid side (“Technology will become sentient and take over the world!”), AI is definitely here to stay. If you’ve used AI to help you write creative writing from blog posts, social media posts, or video scripts, you know AI-generated text can sound stilted or mechanical. AI learns more the more it interacts with humans. Right now, it’s still helpful to work with a writer or editor who can humanize your AI-generated writing. One day, AI may sound more human and may replace me as a writer (I try not to think about this.). Until then, this article will cover some ways to edit AI-generated text.
Read the text carefully: Before you start editing, read the text carefully to understand its context and purpose. This will help you identify any errors or inconsistencies. I recommend reading out loud, or at least moving your lips as if reading aloud if you are unable to read aloud. There are read-aloud functions in many software platforms and web browsers. Reading aloud slows you down. It’s easy to skim and let your brain fill in the gaps, but you must slow down to read what’s actually written on the page.
Check for grammar and spelling errors: Use a grammar and spell-checking tool to identify any errors. AI-generated text can sometimes have mistakes that need to be corrected. Grammarly works well for this, but sometimes Grammarly can not pick up on slang terms. The more creative and conversational your writing, the more you may need to use another piece of software to check for grammar and spelling errors.
Simplify complex sentences: AI-generated text can sometimes be too complex or convoluted. Simplify sentences to make them easier to understand. An easy way to do this is to find sentences with the word “and,” remove the “and,” and add a period. Without getting too far in the weeds, “and” is a conjunction that joins 2 independent clauses, or sentences. You take it out and add a period, and boom, you got 2 sentences where there was one.
Add a personal touch: AI-generated text can sometimes lack a personal touch. Consider adding your own voice and style to make it more engaging. Keep your audience in mind here and make sure they will get your inside jokes and cultural references.
Verify facts: AI-generated text may not always be accurate. Verify any facts or statistics before publishing the content.
Review and revise: After making edits, review the text again to ensure it flows well and communicates the intended message clearly.
Following these steps will help you save time using AI tools to write, but also not sound like you just used AI tools to write.
